This is not an exhaustive list of the characters; it focuses on the principal characters. Principal characters and their positions are presented in order of their importance with regard to setting the historical and political stage.<\/p>\n
PYRRHUS: King of Epirus and widower of Antigone, stepdaughter of Ptolemy, Pharaoh of Egypt.<\/p>\n
ANTIGONE: Daughter of Berenice and stepdaughter of Ptolemy.<\/p>\n
CINEAS: Athenian politician who has become Pyrrhus\u2019s friend and advisor.<\/p>\n
MENESTHEUS: Athenian scholar, friend and general of Pyrrhus.<\/p>\n
DEMETRIUS: Son of Antigonus and widower of Deidameia, Pyrrhus\u2019s sister. He controls much of central and southern Greece, as well as the great Phoenician cities of Tyre and Sidon. His ambition is relentless, and he wishes to increase his power in Greece, as well as regain his father\u2019s lost territories.<\/p>\n
ALEXANDER AND ANTIPATER: Younger sons of Cassander, who have become dual kings of Macedonia following the death of their older brother, Philip.<\/p>\n
LYSIMACHUS: One of Alexander\u2019s generals. King of Thrace, and part of Asia Minor.<\/p>\n
PTOLEMY: One of Alexander\u2019s generals. Pharaoh of Egypt.<\/p>\n
BERENICE: Wife of Ptolemy and Empress of Egypt.<\/p>\n
SELEUCUS: One of Alexander\u2019s generals. King of Asia (Syria, Mesopotamia, and the eastern territories of Alexander\u2019s empire).<\/p>\n
ALEXICRATES: Pyrrhus\u2019s wine steward.<\/p>\n
AGATHOCLES: King of Syracuse, Sicily.<\/p>\n
LANASSA: Daughter of Agathocles.<\/p>\n
BARDYLLIS: King of Illyria.<\/p>\n
BIRCENNA: Daughter of Bardyllis.<\/p>\n
PANTAUCHUS: General of Demetrius.<\/p>\n
MACHAON: Army surgeon and Pyrrhus\u2019s personal physician.<\/p>\n
TELECLEIDES: A Macedonian captain.<\/p>\n
EURYPYLUS: A Macedonian captain.<\/p>\n
GAIUS FABRICIUS: Roman senator and army commander.<\/p>\n
APPIUS CLAUDIUS: An\u00a0old and venerated Roman senator who guides his city to its DESTINY.<\/p>\n
Most of these central characters are historical figures. The exceptions are; Menestheus, Telecleides, and Eurypylus. Also Machaon, except in a legendary sense.
