A Knot in Your Stomach By Yvonne Postma

About the Book and the Author

Synopsis

A Knot in Your Stomach tells the story of a young girl who is bullied because she doesn’t speak. Its lessons resonate with anyone who is different and has paid a price for it.

When Amanda moves from China to the United States, the transition is hard, especially since she never speaks outside of her own home. Amanda makes a good friend named Maria, but is taunted by a group of boys and girls who tease her for being so quiet. The harassment grows and becomes serious, yet Amanda remains silent. When Maria’s family suffers a tragedy, she comes to stay with Amanda and her family.

As Amanda begins to feel closer to Maria, she realizes that she must finally open up about the bullying at school in order to stop it. Amanda and Maria go to their science teacher to explain the truth behind Amanda’s inability to talk. A Knot in Your Stomach poses the question: Will Amanda ever find her voice?
